This book is a masterpiece- of imagination, fiction, and mounting tension. The plot was great, the story too good to be true, I almost envy the imagination the author was blessed with! Sophie is a hatmaker who unwittingly crosses the path of The Witch of the Waste who turns her into an old lady. Then Sophie in search of a cure comes upon the wizard Howl’s moving castle and lets herself in much to the annoyance of Calcifer, the wizard’s fire demon and the wizard’s assistant, Marcus. What ensues is predictably chaotic with Sophie trying her hand at cleaning, ending up sweeping Howl off his feet! Some parts were laugh-out-loud funny, some parts heart-stoppingly sentimental and beneath it, all ran a thread of recognition, of the truly human soul. The characters are well fleshed out and play their roles well.
