The Martian By Andy Weir

The Martian
The Martan

This is an absolute treat to read. Though it has quite many science technicalities even if you don’t understand the details you get a general idea. I always prefer to read the books first but in this case, I have watched the movie already but it didn’t make much of a difference. It’s a brilliant survival journey in extreme scenarios and you actually live and survive every single one of those 549 days (or SOL to be very exact) with Mark Watney. He was a real BADASS and that probably was the best thing about him because that helped him in surviving. Although Watney was the most important character of the novel there were some other interesting characters as well. I especially liked Mindy and Johanssen. Johanssen’s conversation with her father scared the hell out of me, on the other hand, Mindy’s space paparazzi attitude was awesome.

There might be a point when you are forced to think that if all those efforts are really worth? I mean billions of dollars and all those sacrifices (not limited to individuals only, remember Taiyang Shen) for just one human life but as it was explained in the last para of the book (refer the republished edition by Random House, they have a bit edited end than the self-published version by Andy) it was not about one human life, it was about what Watney represented and more than that what we as fellow humans represent.

A must read book for everyone whether you are a Sci-Fi fan or not.
